James Gurney began his career as a background painter for animated films and a cover artist for science fiction and fantasy paperback books. A lifelong interest in archaeology and lost civilizations led to over a dozen assignments for The National Geographic Society, including reconstructions of Etruscan, Moche, and Kushite cultures.
